Today I tried playing stellarclash.io for the first time though I could not even play due to lag
Does anyone know why this is?

Heyy where are you playing from?? The server is in USA so it can be latent on the other side of the world… But even that has been adjusted for smoothness. Please tell me your PING (top left of the screen)
If you are talking about FPS (also visible at top left) and its below 40 then yeah probably its the chromebook problem. To make the game fast in this case you have to reduce the graphics. One simple way to do that is to increase the zoom.
On the contrary if you reduce the zoom the game looks more crisp and nice
